Bere Regis Football Club Archive

Established prior to 1885 and steeped in history and tradition, Bere Regis Football Club (BRFC) can claim to be one of the oldest clubs in the world.  When professional football was legalized in Britain on July 20 1885, Bere Regis Football Club was founded, and we were inaugural members of the South Hants and Dorset football association from which the Dorset County FA (DCFA) was subsequently formed in 1887.

In those early days, the Club was known as 'The Arabs'.

Details of the Football club have been extracted from parish magazines since 1887 and links to these can be found at the bottom of this page.  The full versions of the parish magazines can be found on www.bereregis.org.

During the 1920’s Bere Regis won the Mid-Dorset Village Football League Cup on a number of occasions as well as the Edmonds and Jesty cup.The 1980s were also a good decade for Bere Regis F.C. as they continued to win cups and promotion in the Dorset Football League divisions.  The Saturday team won the Bankes' Cup twice in 1984 & 85, whilst, the second team also added to the silver collection in 1985 by winning the Dorset Division 3 East League Cup.

In the past the club has maintained a tradition for village football by fielding adult teams on both Saturdays and Sundays.

In the 1980’s Bere also started their 6 a side competition which has now become the premier senior 6 a side competition in Dorset.

The new millennium has seen a number of changes at the club. The Saturday side is striving to gain promotion to the Dorset Saturday senior league, regularly finishing in the top 6 six and in the past few seasons narrowly missing out on promotion. However, the demise of the Dorset FA Sunday Football league has meant that there is no longer any senior Sunday football played at the Rec, but has enabled the club to enter two teams into the DCFA Saturday league.

Adam Buddin Memorial Shield
Saturday 3 August 2013

Ten teams battled it out for the Adam Buddin Memorial Shield at Puddletown Recreation Ground. With fine weather and only one pitch, the day was long but full of entertaining six-a-side football. Good quality teams came to conquer but Bere Regis, the defending champions, once again showed their ability and resilience by retaining the trophy.

The Bere Regis team (Carl Dyke - Matt Bennett - Shaun Lillington - Matt Elford Manager - Tom Birch - Elliot Slade - Kevin Portt
Jason Gover), with only two changes from last year, didn’t lose a game all day and only conceded one goal, a penalty, during the final against Sturminster Marshall B. They were presented with the Memorial Shield, and their individual medals, by Mr Rick Buddin, father of the late Adam Buddin.

RUSSELL HEWITT OBE (Old Bear ‘Ed)

Russell has been involved with Bere Regis Sports Club for the past 42 years. On the football side of things, he has graced the hallowed turf of Bere Recreational Ground on countless occasions with his cat like agility between the sticks, but following his decision to end his playing career, he then became manager of the club during the 2008/2009 season.

During his 5 year spell in charge at the club, he proved himself to be an organiser and motivator who made his teams hard to beat and he has earned high respect from many in the way he has presided over remarkable consistency in the league. Although it is undoubtedly his and our regret that he did not win a trophy in his years as manager of Bere Regis or get the team promoted to the much coveted Senior league (narrowly missing out on a number of occasions) he has won so many admirers in keeping Bere Regis in the top six of the Dorset Saturday League Division 1 in his time in charge. Highlights of his managerial career include a 16 game unbeaten run in the 2009/10 season and taking B.R.F.C. to the semi finals of the Dorset Senior Trophy for the first time in the clubs history during the 2010/2011 season, taking some notable scalps on the way.

His impressive managerial record stands at;

2008 - 2009  6th  35 points from 20 games
2009 - 2010  3rd  53 points from 26 games,
2010 - 2011  3rd  34 points from 20 games
2011 - 2012  5th  45 points from 26 games
2012 -2013   6th  34 points from 26 games

League;

Managed 120   W 60  D 18  L 42  Points 196   50% win rate
Cup; Managed   11   W   6  D   0   L   5               55% win rate

Even at 50+ something he was still as fired up and committed as ever, and his decision to step down will shock the local and the footballing community.  The timing of his announcement has been timed to prevent the gloss from being taken away from Sir Alex Ferguson and others who find themselves in a similar situation.

He is a great divider of opinions but who can argue with the remarkable stability, discipline and professionalism he has brought to the club, He is one of Bere Regis’s most respected figures and Bere Regis F.C. now faces a huge decision on choosing a successor.

Thank you Russell (and good luck Peggy!)
