ROGS 1998

The first golf match of Royal Oak Golf Society now known as R.O.G.S. was held on Friday 27th July 1998.

Meetings were held at the Oak in June and July 98 to discuss forming a Golf Society in the village.

The Landlord of the Oak at that time was Mike Jones who encouraged us to form a Society and use his premises as our Clubhouse.

Ali Hewitt was chosen as Captain and Jim Corbin was Vice Captain.

Ali would be Captain for the remainder of the year 1998 and throughout 1999.Jim would be Captain in 2000.

Venues for the rest of the year were fixed and it was agreed that whist we were all self employed that the last Friday of each month would be our golf day out.

Sponsors for Cups were sought and it was also decided that we would all play off 18 handicap for the game to give us an idea of playing standards amongst members.

The first trophy was going to be called the Inaugral Trophy but after the first event the Landlord decided to sponsor the cup and it was renamed the Landlords Cup.

The season 1998 venues were as follows.

Friday July 27             Bulbury Woods                        Inaugral Trophy

Friday August 28         Mid Dorset (Dorset Heights)  Rob Halls Hackers Trophy

Friday September 25    Hyde House                           Captains Cup

Friday October 16        Queens Park                            Zoom Trophy

I cannot recall why the 16th October was chosen as the last match date of 98 but I think it was something to do with Queens Park availability.

The results of the first match was as follows.

1st Roger Duncanson 27 points (C.P.O.)
