November 2002 ROGS ON TOUR TO PORTUGAL

On Saturday October 5th 2002, ten of the Royal Oak Golf Society members together with wives, partners and friends flew out to Lisbon in Portugal for a weeks' holiday. Previous years had seen ROGS play in Southern Ireland (2000), Puerto Banus in Spain (2001) and therefore trophies and playing criteria had already been established. The group stayed in the Hotel Baia in Cascais, a resort 20 minutes from Lisbon. Four rounds of golf were arranged over the seven days. Sunday 6th October saw the ROGS play at Quinta do Marina for the French Open Trophy. The winner was Martin Debenham with Roger Duncanson second and Captain Robbie Hail in third place. As is customary with ROGS, shots were deducted from the winners (3,2 & 1 respectively) for the next game at Estoril, This was for the Bantry Bay Tray with Graham Price the winner, Ali Hewitt second and Rob Hall third. On Thursday 10th, the Middleton Cup was played for at Penha Longo, a Portuguese Open venue. Guy Storey won this with Marlin Debenham second and Jim Corbin third. The final game was for the Fotta Island Pint and was played at the best course of all, Praia DEl Rey with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. This was won by Ali Hewitt with Graham Price second and Roger Duncanson third.

Arty Crocker was one of the guests and presented a prize to the highest score of the week which went to Ali Hewitt. Martin Debenham won the 'Tourist trophy' for the best aggregate score over the four rounds of golf. As always when you enjoy the company and the golf, the week went too quickly. A presentation evening was held on the Friday in the Hotel Baia and all winners were presented with their medals. The trophies will be presented at the ROGS annual presentation evening on Saturday 7th. December 2002 at Bulbury Golf Club. Heartfelt thanks were extended to Guy Storey, who yet again organised this tour without a single hitch. Well there were one or two but not down to Guy and these stories con only be told face to face - so until I see you again.

Just a little reminder to all members - the date of the AGM has been changed from 14th. November to Thursday 21st. November 2002 at 730pm prompt in the Royal Oak when we welcome all existing and any new members to attend.
