Another year, more grey hairs, higher golfing handicaps, longer backswings and shakier putters… yet the ladies look younger. Yes, it was the annual migration to the sunshine for ROGS’ hardened golfing tourists as the natives of this year’s country of choice, Turkey, enjoyed respite from Syrian bombs by putting their tin helmets to good use as protection against rogue ROGS golf balls flying into their back gardens and roofs.
The usual motley crew of 12 ROGS alongside their beautiful partners + fetus (Bru’s partner Merritt being fashionably late due to Doctor SOS and weight allowance certification) Antalya was the destination and following huge Russian investment in the late 1990’s the ROGS were able to make divots at the beautiful Hotel Sirene with its 2 associated Championship courses surrounded by 12 other courses all within a 15 minute fun bus drive. All complemented by all-inclusive drinks tab every night which Bru has single handedly aiming to put out of business and 34 degree blue skies, it was indeed bliss.
The ladies played their part in strenuous sunbathing, boozy lunches, lilo pool racing, hectic shopping in neighboring market towns before welcoming home their weary ROGS heroes from their rounds of golf with false sympathic comments and pretend listening to where and why it all went wrong! Prior to showering, after-sun session, adorning shiny glad-rags before heading to the free food and drink with Nurrish look-alike Russian dolls providing entertainment to see through the evenings… Repeat for 6 days!
The first day we were up at 6:30 (4:30 UK time) to play at the first of the associated courses adjoining the hotel, which was The Pasha and we were playing for the Bantry Bay Tray, a short, but beautiful test of golf with plenty of water to swallow the stray titliest or two, although in Martin “The Noise” Debenham case it would have been commandos and a mix of any other lake balls he could put his hands on!! The day saw Dean Merritt shrug off sticky weather conditions to win handsomely with 36 points, ‘The Arm’ Jim Corbin second with 35 points and holiday bookmaker ‘Honest Pricey’ third with 33 points.
The Second Day we traveled 15 minutes down the road to the stunning tree lined Carya Golf Course which is described as the Turkish Sunningdale to play for The French Open. This saw “Honest” Pricey almost late for his tee off time as he was reportedly heard arranging the evening’s entertainment with the Swedish starter!! Again, the theme running through the Turkish course is plenty of water hazards as Keith “The Aviator” Nurrish found out in a costly way, reportedly losing three balls in the same lake, one bouncing off of his buggy!! However we need worry as he was last seen in his aqualung dredging the lakes to retrieve them!! The day saw Guy “The Spy” Storey win with 35 points ahead of Roger “Dunco” Duncanson with 33 points and Tiny Merritt third with 31 points.
After 2 days R&R , the next day we again traveled a few miles down the road to compete for The Middleton Cup at the Robinson Noblis Goft Course, this again proved an interesting test…..for all of the wrong reasons!! Firstly imagine after 2 days of various members of the ROGS attempting to drink the all inclusive bar dry (lets not forget the ladies with Tracy on the Bacardi, Me Julie on the Tia Maria, and Nerris Corbin intravenously being fed with red wine), we arrive at the front desk only to be told “sorry but we don’t’ have any buggies available today”. We need not worry though as they did have a defribulator fitted to the mains in the half way house on the 10th tee in case any of the ROGS needed it!! This also saw the first piece of petulance from a ROGS member, which can only be described as “Sprinkergate”. This is where, for no apparent reason sprinklers were being left on in the fairway making the fairways a little moist despite us trying to play our shots, now some of you may be asking why that would trouble the majority of us when we don’t hit many fairways, however it was left to the long arm of the law to walk off of the course in disgust, tripping over his dummy and rattle in the process, to burst into the managers office before cuffing him to the desk demanding them to be turned off before anything was done about it!! I will not let on who did this, but for the keen Countdown fans amongst you, rearrange these letters JARRED IAN, and you will no doubt fathom it out!! This saw Jim “The Arm” Corbin prevail the winner with 29 points, Russell “Bobba” White in second on count back again with 29 point and Editors Pin-Up Martin “The Noise” Debenham third with 28 points.
The final day saw us play for The Fota Island Pint in the acclaimed PGA Sultan which is the other course associated to our hotel. This was also to be the same course the Messrs Woods, McIlroy, Westwood & Rose would be playing 2 weeks later!! It was a tight affair with tricky rough, fast greens, and the 18th hole over water!! It was eventually won by Ian “ Two Tones” Jarred with a fantastic 30 points, followed by Jim “ The Arm” Corbin who showed muscle scoring 26 points and “Tiny” Merritt capped fine weeks performance with third on count back again with 26 points.
This was also followed by 2 ROGS birthdays that day, one of them being Mrs Arlene Duncanson, and the other who celebrated his official birthday ( he is a knight of the realm, and believes he should be entitled to an unofficial one also) was Sir Geoffrey Adams!!
The overall Tourist Trophy won by Merritt with 122 points, followed in by “The Arm” Corbin with 115 points and “Honest” Pricey third with 111 points.
The PittBull International Pairs trophy very kindly donated by John “The Bull” Pitts gains greater prestigious acclaim year by year and this year it saw a 3 way fight between The Arm/Merritt, Dunco/Bobba and The Noise/Bru, despite it being close up until the final day, it saw the heavyweight duo of Tiny & The Arm prevailing with a combined score of 237 points followed by Dunco/Bobba in second on 215 points and The Noise/Bru with 207 points.
It would also be remiss of me whilst writing to yet again thank Mr Guy Storey for putting the tour together, and he was very kindly rewarded by “Honest” Price with an envelope of cash stuffed to the tune of £500 after correctly predicting the winner of the tour.

ZOOM TROPHY
Captain ‘EAR’
For our last outing of the season and my final event as Captain, I decided to keep things more local and play for the Zoom trophy at Came Down Golf Club near Dorchester. Once again a fine turnout saw 26 SUPER ROGS vie for greatness amongst their peers.
This great honour would be bestowed upon their very own Captain yours truly……….“Thoroughly deserved” I hear my fellow ROGS say……….
Well that was how I wrote my final script, unfortunately I awoke from my day dream and Messer’ Jamie ‘I am GOK WAN’ Lake had other ideas. He managed the fairways and greens of Came Down with consummate ease and returned a fantastic score of 36 points in rather windswept and moist conditions. You may be wondering why I refer to him in this manner? One only need take one look at the shirt and tie combination that he deemed fashionable. This may well have been at home on the catwalks of Paris but this is Dorset and his fellow ROGS took great delight in pointing out the obvious!
In second place on count-back with 35 points was Tim ‘The Neighbour’ Porter and picking up the bronze medal, again with 35 points was Paul ‘C’Mon Ebby’ Ebsworth.
We were joined by 2 guests Nick Cheeseman and Matt Huntley who I am sure both enjoyed their ROGS experience.
The usual prizes were up for grabs:
Barry ‘Bazza’ Watts had a field day claiming nearest the pin on the 2nd hole, which he duly putted out for a two and thus won him the entire money pot. Not happy with his haul he also claimed the nearest the pin in two on the 8th hole. Well done Bazza!
Also getting in on the act was Guy ‘Spy’ Storey who picked up nearest the pin on the 10th hole and after 17 gruelling holes Julian ‘Howling Mad’ Flower found a last reserve of energy to blast one down the final fairway and claim the longest drive.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the ROGS for a great season and hope that everybody enjoyed the courses. Good luck to our in coming Captain Mr Roger ‘5 ball’ Johns who I know will do a sterling job.
I would also like to mention one of our ‘well loved’ members, our gentle giant John Ruskin who we wish all the best and hope to see ‘striping’ the ball down the fairway very soon.
I look forward to seeing you all at the Dorset Golf and Country Club on Saturday 8th December for the Cup of good Cheer and annual prize giving. As President, I will be trying to erase the memory of last years ‘Ryder Cup style’ whitewash at the hands of ‘I didn’t gloat too much Merritt’ and inflict my own trouncing over the new captain.

With the season rapidly nearing an end 26 ‘ROGS’ made the penultimate trip to Alresford, a new venue that was thoroughly enjoyed even if the conditions were found to be slightly moist.
For the second month running scores were on the lower side and nothing could separate the top four players, therefore enter our well-trusted handicap secretary ‘Sir’ Geoffrey Adams to fire up the laptop and let the computer crunch its way through the day’s scores. Congratulations to Graeme ‘Honest Price Bookies’ Price who managed to overcome his Turkish tourist hangover to win the President’s cup on count-back with 35 points from Barry ‘Bazza’ Watts in second and Brian Wiffen in third. Graeme also returned the only two of the day and in doing so won the money pot. I believe this will go towards ‘paying out’ to Guy ‘Spy’ Storey who had rather a good ‘day at the races’ backing our very own president to win the tourist trophy in Turkey and fleecing ‘Honest’ in the process.
Well done to Mr ‘Tiny’ Merritt who showed his class once again fighting off stiff competition to lift this coveted accolade, and a personal thank you to Mr Merritt, as the Captain will also be paying ‘Honest’ a visit to settle accounts.
Whilst I am congratulating I must also mention that ‘Sir’ Charles ‘of the’ Way managed (against all the odds) to beat the in form Garry ‘Lewie’ Lewis in the Final of the Summer Knockout in an epic encounter at Wareham. Well done Charlie!

For the seventh outing of the season the ROGS ventured to an old favourite and enjoyed yet another sunny day at Yeovil Golf Club. The Captain was joined by the day’s sponsor Jim ‘THE ARM’ Corbin and Shaun ‘BRU’ Brady who were both warming up nicely for the forthcoming tour of Turkey. The Captain noted all current form and finalised business with ‘HONEST’ Price bookies.
Nearest the pin on the second hole was picked up by John ‘RUSKY’ Ruskin. The longest Drive on the 11th hole was won by Mark ‘TWEED’ Teed. Nearest the pin on the 13th hole was picked up by Tim ‘THE NEIGHBOUR’ Porter and getting in on the act again was Jonny Ruskin; nearly holing his second to pick up nearest the pin in 2 on the 18th.
There were 4 two’s; and sharing the money pot were: John Ruskin, Martin ‘MD’ Debenham, John ‘PITBULL’ Pitts and ‘Sir’ Charles ‘of the’ Way.
With perfect playing conditions yours truly set the early pace with 35 points but alas, this was not to last as Mr Teed had obviously not read the Captain’s script and recorded an admirable 36 points which proved to be the winning score of the day. In third place with 34 points on count back was Barry ‘THAT’s A RIGHT TOUCH’ Watts.
I look forward to seeing you all for the President’s Cup at Alresford GC on the 28th September, first tee 13.00. No doubt we will be hearing numerous accounts and stories of antics from our Turkish Tourists who may well be sleepy-eyed; having arrived home a mere 10 hours before commencement of the first tee of the President’s Cup. Knowing the hard-core tourists that they are I am sure this will prove a minor obstacle and another great turnout will ensue…
Lastly; A massive thank you to the ‘stealthy person’ who kindly left the ‘Whitbread Pairs Shield’ outside the Secretary’s front door in the dead of night. It has been returned to the trophy cabinet with no questions asked…

Once again glorious weather greeted 30 of our finest ‘super’ ROGS golfers to High Post Golf Club for the Captain’s Cup. Another first time venue for the ROGS and one described as a ‘hidden gem’.
With the course being set up for the club’s championship it was found to be in excellent condition with lush fairways and fast greens; although I think the majority of ROGS would describe the ‘ROUGH’ as anything but a ‘GEM’. That said, this down-land course was a delight to play and even if the golf was a little testing at times you could always take a few deep breaths and enjoy the spectacular views overlooking Salisbury plain. Judging by the scores on the day the Captain was obviously not alone in his sightseeing!
With the customary prizes on offer, we find the usual suspects plying their trade with Julian ‘Barrow’ Flower picking up Nearest the pin on the 8th hole (although not recording a 2 on this occasion). There were however, two 2’s both on the 11th hole. Sharing the money pot was ‘General’ Gordy Tucker and ‘Bazza’ Barry Watts. Nearest the pin on the 11th was won by Martin ‘MD’ Debenham. Nearest the pin in two on the 4th was won by John ‘Rusky’ Ruskin and longest drive was picked up by our only guest of the day Mr. Merrick Smith.
Onto the medals and in third place on count-back with 34 points was Doug ‘king of spoof’ Marsh. Also with 34 points, picking up the silver medal and in the prizes once again was Martin ‘MD’ Debenham. However, yards ahead of the field with a magnificent 39 points and winner of the Captain’s Cup 2012 Mr. Simon Scott aka ‘The Worm’.
Simon will now have his name added to the roll of honour board in the sports club and join an illustrious band of men. Well done Simon!

With yours truly escaping the dismal weather for sunnier climes it was left to my VC Roger ‘5 ball’ Johns to stand in and take up the reins for the June outing to an old local favourite.

A bright and windy day saw 28 ROGS and 6 guests tackle the fairways of Dudsbury and our acting Captain Roger Johns beat Tim Porter on count back. Roger and Tim both had 38. Bobber was third with 36.

What glorious weather we enjoyed on our visit to Cams Hall Golf Club in Fareham. A new venue for the ROGS and one that could be revisited in the near future if the nods of approval are anything to go by. Situated within the grounds of the original Cams Hall estate it offered cracking views across the marina and Portsmouth harbour just going to show what a fantastic part of the world we are lucky enough to live in.
A most welcome return to the ROGS saw Rob ‘Ace of Base’ Acey in fine form reminiscing over his Maori hunting days from his sojourn to New Zealand. “Welcome back Rob”
Onto business, and this month saw 28 combatants vying for the Ex Landlord’s Cup once again kindly sponsored by Mr Mark Teed. However, had they known they would be competing against our newest recruit to the professional ranks I am unsure if the turnout would have been so good? Congratulations to Mr Garry “Lewie” Lewis who triumphed with an outstanding 45 points. Rumour has it, had it not been for a bit of wayward putting we could have witnessed our first score over 50 points. Well done “Lewie” who will see his handicap slashed by 6 shots for the upcoming trip to the Vale Resort in Wales; just to endorse his supremacy on the day Garry walked off with the only 2 on the 11th hole taking the money pot of £28. Very well done Garry!
In Second place with an admirable 38 points was The General Mr. Gordy Tucker. On count back and getting in on the medals once again was Julian “Barrow” Flower with 36 points.
Nearest the pin on the 7th hole was picked up by the General. Nearest the pin in two on the 9th hole was won by our Antipodean, Rob “Ace of Base” Acey. Picking up 2 prizes of nearest the pin on the 17th and the longest drive on the 14th hole was Mr Tim Porter. Well done to all!
For the second month running the Captain had the honour of inducting a new member into the fold and welcoming Mr Neil Middleditch after serving his 3-match apprenticeship. I trust Neil will be a great addition to the ROGS and will not be trying out for the newest of Olympic sports “Golf Club throwing” (unlike our previous newest member Mr Ian Spalding). Apparently, this new sport is judged not on distance but on sound and how close you can get the golf club to resembling the rotors of a helicopter, for those of you who have tried this new sport I think you know what I mean. Enough said…
Next month’s outing will be at Dudsbury golf club on the 29th June for the Robbie Hall Hackers Trophy. First Tee 14.10. Unfortunately, the Captain has a prior engagement and will be handing the reins over to the Vice Captain Mr Roger “5 ball” Johns who I am sure will do an exemplary job.
Another date for the Diary is the Annual BRSC versus ROGS BBQ & cricket match due to take place on Sunday 22nd July from 1.30pm, as usual support for this prestigious event will be greatly welcomed and I am sure Mr Price will be asking for volunteers imminently.
For those going to the Vale Resort for the weekend tour I will see you there, otherwise Adios and see you all for Captain’s Day on the 27th July.

MEMBERS CHALLENGE
Captain ‘EAR’
For our third outing of the season we revisited an old favourite, Knighton Heath, which was in excellent condition considering the amount of rain it had sustained during our ‘wettest drought ever’. Luckily the Captain’s order of, “a brief respite from the damp conditions”, was delivered just on time and the sun came out albeit with a light breeze. Hence, playing conditions were considerably more favourable than those of the previous week’s monsoon.
Another great turnout saw 27 SUPER-ROGS vying for supremacy while battling it out for the Members Challenge Trophy. As usual there were the normal prizes on offer and nearest the pin in 2 on the 8th hole was won by Doug Marsh. The longest drive on the 10th and nearest the pin on the 14th were picked up by Julian ‘Barrow’ Flower, who continues his excellent form. Lastly Neil Middleditch won nearest the pin on the 18th hole. Neil, playing his second time as a guest, thanked everyone for a wonderful day and put his performance on the 18th down to the ‘moist’ condition of the green.
There were four 2’s shared between ‘Sir’ Geoffrey Adams on the very difficult 3rd hole, Mr. Flower, (who picked up two, one on the 11th hole and the other on the 14th), and Mr Teed who also managed to get in on the act and take a share of the pot.
With the occasional gusting wind and tight layout of the course the scores varied by 17 points and were generally lower than expected.
The winning score of 35 points was secured by Mr Mark ‘Tweed’ Teed. In Second place with 34 points was Mr. Barry ‘That’s a right touch’ Watts and picking up the bonze medal was Mr. John ‘Rusky’ Ruskin with 33 points. Well done to all.
The Captain had a special duty to perform after the meal and presented Mr. Ian Spalding with a ROGS tie, welcoming him into the fold as the newest member after playing his third game as a guest.
A special mention this month goes to my Vice Captain Mr. Roger ‘Cue ball’ Johns who can now boast more additions to his trophy cabinet courtesy of the President; a trio of pool balls majestically mounted on beautiful wooden plinths (a big thank you to Mr Debenham). These trophies form part of championing his newly crowned ‘5 ball’ status within the ROGS.

Normal service resumed and an end to the rambunctious behaviour in the absence of yours truly, the less said the better so moving swiftly on: For our second outing of the season, we ventured into Hampshire and travelled to South Winchester, a new venue for the ROGS and one I had eagerly anticipated. Thankfully, the course lived up to expectation.
Many thanks to my playing partners on the day, firstly the days sponsor Mr Guy ‘Spy’ Storey and secondly Mr Russell ‘Bobber’ White who both made it a fantastically enjoyable round, even if I did have to listen to the woes of championship football versus a champions league spot……..demise…(I know the season’s not finished yet)!
A great turnout of 29 Super ROGS made the trip and unusually propping up the bottom of the leader board were last months Pairs winners of ‘Sir’ Charles Way and Julian ‘Barrow’ Flower, oh how he mighty have fallen… To be honest the Captain was a little confused at the prize giving and was having a bout of déjà vu wondering if he needed to bring the wheelbarrow out of retirement having to present Mr. Flower with three prizes. Firstly, two nearest the pins followed by the longest drive, one wonders what happened on the other 15 holes? Fortunately, Mark Teed managed to stop a clean sweep and picked up nearest the pin in two on the 10th hole.
There were three two’s, and sharing the kitty were Peter ‘PI’ Foster, Ian ‘tones’ Jarred and Mark ‘Tweed’ Teed.
Although the course played long it was open and as conditions were near perfect for scoring most were expecting some high scores to materialise. However it would appear the ROGS could not take advantage of the ‘golfing gods’ generosity. It was left to Jim Corbin to tame the course wielding the ‘ARM’ to great effect returning 36 points to win the GRS trophy and having his handicap slashed by three for his efforts. In second and third place both with 36 points and placed via count back were Simon Scott and Mark Teed respectively. Congratulations and well done to all!
One last thing I feel needs a mention, rumour has it there was a near accident just outside Romsey involving a golf ball. I’m sure it had nothing to do with our sponsor of the day sending his ProV1 hurtling down the A3090 of the 12th tee…

WHITBREAD PAIRS TROPHY

With the festivities and frolics of Christmas a distant memory it was once again time to clean the shoes, dust the clubs and don the plus fours for the start of a new ROGS season. The first outing of the year took us to an old favourite Rushmore Park but unfortunately yours truly had sustained an ankle injury whilst getting in a bit of pre season practice, suffice to say rabbit stew would seem a fitting meal after falling foul to one of the many rabbit holes that blight many a golf course. Therefore, due to my predicament I handed over to my trusted VC Mr Roger Johns to get some pre 2013 season practice, many thanks Roger.
Onto business…and the first trophy of the year was the NEW pair’s trophy replacing the mislaid wooden shield version, which must have kept somebody’s fire roaring through the whole winter due to its sheer size and likelihood it was cut from a giant sequoia tree!
Following on from last years successful introduction of Texas scramble I decided to once again give the combatants ample opportunity to rely on their partner and run with the same format albeit over a more sedate 18 holes.
A fantastic turnout considering the time of year, but the pair’s competition always gets the juices flowing and the members could all be seen either blowing huge sighs of relief or looking to the heavens in disbelief at the outcome of the draw and the result of whose company they would have to endure for the coming 18 holes.
As you would expect with this format the scores were expected to be on the higher side and the ROGS did not disappoint with a plethora of scores above 36 points. In third place were Peter ‘PI’ Foster and Shaun ‘Bru’ Brady with 38 points. In second place were Doug Marsh and Jamie Lake with an impressive 39 points, but this years winners with a massive 40 points were Sir Charles of the Way and Julian ‘Barrow’ Flower who obviously enjoyed picking up last years haul in the wheelbarrow and continues his fine form in 2012. I must also mention that this is the second year running for Sir Charles in the pairs so what price on a Hat trick next year honest Price?
As usual, there were the normal nearest pins and longest drive prizes and the results were as follows: Nearest the pin on the 4th went to Russell French. Nearest the pin in 2 was a joint effort between John Ruskin and Martin Debenham. Tim Porter picked up longest drive on the 15th and finishing up was Russell ‘Bobber’ White claiming the nearest pin prize on the 17th. I look forward to seeing you at the next outing where battle will commence at 12 noon on the 30th March for the ‘GRS Architects Trophy’ at South Winchester GC, which is a new venue for the ROGS and comes highly recommended. All being well the Captain should resume duties as normal.

ROGS Bere Regis
Yes, it is that time of year again, time for hanging your stocking over the fireplace, decorating the Xmas tree and over-indulging on food and fire water. But more importantly it brings a changing of the guard and the battle of Bere in the form of the Christmas Cup of Good Cheer, which traditionally brings the curtain down on another successful ROGS golfing season.
Led magnificently throughout 2011 by Captain Merritt, it was now time to hand over the reins to myself, affectionately now known as THE EAR, (for the life of me I can’t see why?). However, I do prefer it to the previous seasons’ calling of Brett ‘The Bridesmaid’ Standerwick. Thanks once again Mr Merritt!
My mission for the coming year; to lead the Super Rogs to some new and old favourite venues which will no doubt turn up some humorous stories that will keep us all entertained in 2011. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing captain for all his hard work through 2011. Thank you for a truly fantastic and memorable season and without doubt I have huge shoes to fill!.
With a superb turn out braving the elements, the course was (as always) in superb condition given all the wet weather of late (drought? what drought!). This was the annual ‘Battle of Bere’, where the incoming President’s handpicked team takes on the best of the best….the Captain’s elect. The day didn’t get off to the best of starts with the Captain conceding early ground to the president who was giving a master class on the greens and the day only deteriorated as the results came in, suffice to say it will be a day that the President will remember and the Captain will swiftly erase from memory.
I apologies if any of the following results are not truly accurate or complete but due to some early festive frolics the following is what I have managed to piece together through the haze of a fun packed evening.
In third position was Graeme (I only like summer golf) Price with 38 points, the runner up on count back was Tich (Jiminez) White; however the event was won by the President Mr Dean Merritt with a superb 41 points, who will no doubt see his handicap slashed for his efforts!! Nearest the pins were shared by Julian the ‘the barrow’ Flower and Barry ‘Bazza’ Watts with nearest the pin in 2 won by Gary Lewis, the longest drive was won yet again by ‘the barrow’ who thinned his driver in excess of 300 yards!! The 2’s kitty was shared 5 ways by Graeme ‘honest’ Price, Paul ‘C’mon Ebby’ Ebsworth, Julian ‘the barrow’ Flower and enjoying two 2’s was Peter P.I. Foster. Well done to all.
May I also take this opportunity to thank everybody that donated draw prizes and bought tickets on the night. Also a massive thanks to my VC Roger Johns for all his hard work organising the raffle and coercing local businesses and golf courses into donating some great prizes. In addition I would also like thank Mrs Captain, Mrs Vice Captain and Miss Sarah Foster for all their efforts selling draw tickets which raised a fantastic £560. This will be donated to my chosen charities for the forthcoming year; Macmillan Cancer Support and the Multiple Sclerosis Trust.
I hope that you had a wonderful Xmas, a refreshing New Year, and trust that you will all be on a total detox from now until the first ROGS match of the new season on the 24th February where we will be competing for the ‘new’ pairs trophy at Rushmore Park.
