ZOOM TROPHY
For our final outing of the season, and my swansong as captain, we
travelled just down the road to Ashley Wood GC. A sun kissed
day
on the rolling plains of Blandford saw the biggest turnout of the year
battle it out for the Zoom Trophy.
The nearest the pin on the 18th hole was won by scratch golfer
‘Howlin Mad’ Flower. Nearest the pin on
the 7th was
won by the outgoing president Shaun ‘Bru’
Brady.
Nearest the pin in 2 shots on the 12th was won by local celebrity Neil
‘Poole Pirate’ Middleditch, and the longest drive
on the
14th was won by Mark ‘The Patch’ Teed.
We had a really close finish which has been common place in the ROGS
this year. However in third place was Barry ‘A
Right
Touch’ Watts, in second place was Richard
‘Titch’
White with a magnificent 39 points, however the winner on count back
also with 39 points was Jim ‘Beware Of The Shank
Ark’
Corbin……well played Jim!!
There was only one 2 scored on the day, coming on the 9th hole from the
putter of local hero Doug ‘The Bomb’ Marsh after
putting
the his tee shot inches away from a hole in one!!
I would like to thank everybody for a fantastic season, and I hope that
everybody had fun!! I would also like to finish by wishing
next
years captain Brett Standerwick all the very best where I know he will
do an unbelievable job, and lead the ROGS from strength to strength.
Captain Tiny
JIM CORBIN CUP
For our penultimate outing of the season we travelled back into
Hampshire to play Hamtworth GC. A splendid day out with
temperatures reaching record levels, as 26 ROGS members, and 3 guests
threaded their way through the New Forest to battle out for the Jim
Corbin Cup, and we were treated to a course in beautiful condition, and
a true test of golf.
The nearest the pin on the 8th hole was won by ‘Howlin
Mad’
Flower. Nearest the pin on the 10th was won by the sponsor
for
the day Jim ‘Turncoat’ Corbin. Nearest
the pin in 2
shots on the 3rd was one by Mark ‘The Patch’ Teed
who also
won the longest drive on the 16th with a monster drive beating his
colleagues by 40 yards!!
We had the closest finish ROGS history, with 5 players tied at the top
on 34 points. However on count back in third place Gordy
‘The General’ Tucker, in second place was Jamie
’I’m A Lover Not A Fighter’ Lake, however
the winner
was Howlin Mad ‘Flower playing off of a handicap of
5……well played Julian!!
There was only one 2 scored on the day, coming from the putter of
Graeme ‘Only One In The Society’ Price, after
holing a 50
foot chip from just off of the green!
I look forward to seeing you at the final outing of the season at
Ashley Wood GC on the 28th October for the Zoom Trophy, first tee off
at 12:15.
Captain Tiny
ROB HALL HACKERS TROPHY
For our seventh outing of the season we were local at Bulbury Woods Golf Club. I have to say that it was on the best condition that I have ever seen, and is a credit to the hard work of the green keepers over the last year. I was on the tee at 11:30 after being told we could tee off early, however because of a torrential downpour, the rest of my group decided to leave me waiting in the rain for a while…….is that any way to treat your captain I ask myself, although looking back at the rest of the members scoffing their bacon butties in the warm clubhouse, I could hardly blame them!!
The nearest the pin on the 6th hole was won by Jamie
‘Laker’ Lake where he missed his 3 foot birdie putt
for a 2
and a share of £30 that I promised I was not going to
mention. Nearest the pin on the 10th was won by Sir
Geoffrey. Nearest the pin in 2 shots on the 18th was one by
‘Howlin Mad’ Flower who also won the longest drive
on the
15th with a duffed 3 wood!!
In third place on count back with 36 points was Jamie
‘Laker’ Lake, in second place also on 36 points was
‘Titch’ White, however the winner was Martin
‘The
Zimmer’ Debenham with a magnificent 37
points……well
played MD!!
There was only one 2 scored on the day, coming from the putter of Tim
‘The Neighbour’ Porter, after holing a 50 foot
putt, and
have I also mentioned that Jamie Lake missed his putt on the same hole!?
There were also special presentations made by the Captain to Simon
‘The Worm’ Scott, Peter ‘The
Missing
Digit’ Cheeseman, Martin ‘The Zimmer’
Debenham, and
not forgetting Keith ‘Greengrass’ Nurrish.
I look forward to seeing you at the next outing at Hamptworth GC on the
30th September for the Jim Corbin Cup, first tee off at 12:30.

PRESIDENTS CUP
For our sixth outing of the season we travelled into Hampshire to play
the spectacular Stoneham Golf Club. The course is laid out
over
beautiful undulating landscape which is combination of heathland and
parkland and a really tough challenge to play for the Presidents
Cup. I have to say that in my opinion it rates amongst the
finest
courses that we have played, and we were looked after superbly all day.
The nearest the pin on the 8th hole was won by Roger ‘The
Cueball’ Johns which proved to be the first of many that he
was
to pick up that day also winning the nearest the pin on the 10th hole
also. Nearest the pin in 2 shots on the 13th was one by the
Butch
Harmon impersonator himself Jim ‘The Arm’ Corbin,
and the
longest drive on the 18th was won by yours truly having put all my
weight behind it……a 450 yard drive I hear you
asking
yourself!!
In third place on count back with 38 points was ‘The
Cueball’, in second place also on 38 points was Jamie
‘Sicknote’ Lake, however the winner was
‘Howlin
Mad’ Flower with a magnificent 39 points playing off of a
handicap of 5……well played Julian!!
There were also four 2’s scored on the day, one coming again
from
‘The Cueball’, and the others coming from
‘The
Missing Digit’ Cheeseman, Shaun ‘Bru’
Brady and Paul
‘Come on Ebby’ Ebsworth!
There was also a special presentation made by the Captain to Martin
‘The Zimmer’ Debenham whereby there is now an
addition to
his growing fleet of personalised vehicles, albeit for legal reasons we
cannot publish the picture of the handover!
I look forward to seeing you at the next outing at Bulbury Woods GC on
the 26th August for the Rob Hall Hackers Trophy, first tee off at
12:06.

CAPTAINS CUP
For our fifth outing of the season we travelled into the New Forest to
play The Manor Course at Bramshaw, one of my favourite courses in the
area, and a fitting place to play for the Captain’s
Cup.
The course was in excellent condition, rolling fairways, accurate
green, and inviting ditches…….just ask Mr. Price!!
The nearest the pin on the 4th hole was won by John ‘The
Bull’ Pitts, nearest the pin on the 9th was won by local
favourite ‘Rusty’ Ruskin, in good old ROGS spirit
nobody
managed to hit the green in two on the 18th therefore nobody could lay
claim to the prize. Longest drive on the 8th was won with a
swish
of the ‘tache by Peter ’PI’ Foster, and
nearest the
line on the 16th was won by ‘The General’ Tucker.
In third place on count back with 32 points was our newest recruit
Barry ‘That’s a right touch’ Watts, in
second place
was ‘Howlin Mad’ Flower again with 32 points, but
the
winner was ‘The Bull’ Pitts with a magnificent 36
points……well played John!!
There were also two 2’s scored on the day, one coming from
the
winner ‘The Bull’ Pitts, the other coming from
‘The
Furball’ French after hitting his tee shot through a bunker
onto
the green before sinking the putt!!
I look forward to seeing you at the next outing at Stoneham GC on the
29th July for the Presidents Cup, first tee off at 12:00.
Captain Tiny
LANDLORDS CUP
For our forth outing of the new season we travelled some 75 miles to
The Warren GC, a new course for the ROGS having never played there in
the previous 14 seasons, a true links course set in the mouth of the
Exe estuary with some of the best and fastest greens I have ever played
on.
The nearest the pin on the 5th hole was won by Martin
‘Section
12’ Debenham , nearest the pin on the 13th was won by
‘Howlin Mad’ Flower, nearest the pin in two on the
7th hole
was Tim ‘Henry VIII’ Porter, lastly longest drive
was won
again by Mark ’Goodhew’ Teed by a hairs width from
‘The Furball’ French.
In difficult breezy conditions, on a tight course with undulating,
lightening fast greens, the scores varied tremendously.
However,
in third place on count back with 38 points was Peter ‘The
Missing Digit’ Cheeseman, in second place was Russell
‘Bobber’ White again with 38 points, but the winner
was
Mark ’Goodhew’ Teed with 39
points……well
played Mark!!
There were also three 2’s scored on the day, one coming from
the
winner ’Goodhew’ Teed, the others coming from
‘Bobber’ White and ‘Howlin Mad’
Flower. Best
guest went to Mike Crisford with 29 points.
I look forward to seeing you at the next outing at Bramshaw GC on the
24th June for the Captains Cup, first tee off at 1:15.
Captain Tiny
MEMBERS CHALLENGE TROPHY
For our third outing of the new season we travelled to Hockley GC, a new course for the ROGS having never played there in the previous 14 seasons, the course is set in 250 acres of chalk downland overlooking Winchester. We also had our best turn out of the year so far, with over 30 members declining ‘The Royal Invite’ and instead accepting the captain’s call!!
The nearest the pin on the 5th hole was won by one of our guest for the day Terry Hunt who was brought along by Geoff ‘Botox’ Adams, nearest the pin on the 16th was won by local favourite John ‘Rusty’ Ruskin, nearest the pin in two on the 6th hole was John ‘Biggsy’ Beasley, lastly longest drive was won by Mark ’Goodhew’ Teed by a hairs width.
In difficult breezy conditions, on a tight course with undulating greens, the scores varied by 20 points. However, in third place with 38 points was John ‘Rusty’ Ruskin, in second place was Chris ‘The Combover’ Sumner with 39 points, but the winner on count back was Tim ‘Baa Baa’ Porter again with 39 points……well played Tim!!
There were also five 2’s scored on the day, one coming from the winner ‘Baa Baa’ Porter, the others coming from ‘Rusty’ Ruskin, ‘The Combover’ Sumner, ‘9 Year Drought’ Johns, and finally Jim ‘The Turncoat’ Corbin who is allegedly going to use his winnings to pay his subscription to Swanage Legion Society!!
Best guest went to Barry ‘That’s a Right Touch’ Watts with 35 points. There were also some other special prizes given out on the day to ‘Section 12’ Debenham, ‘The Furball’ French and finally to ‘Goodhew’ Teed who was reunited with his bush.
I look forward to seeing you at the next outing at Dawlish Warren GC on the 27th May for the Landlords Cup, first tee off at 12:00.
Captain Tiny
GRS TROPHY
For our second outing of the new season we travelled to Romsey GC, a
relatively short but narrow and testing course described by a
journalist as ‘A real woodland gem’ the course
makes its
way through undulating ground with tree lined fairways, raised greens
and deep bunkers. We were also blessed with some of the best
weather of the year so far, which made the day even more enjoyable.
The nearest the pin on the 3rd hole was won by Russell
‘Arthur
Daley’ French with a stunning rescue club to within 5 feet of
the
hole, nearest the pin on the 10th hole was Roger ‘9 year
drought’ Johns, and the nearest the pin in 2 on the 15th hole
was
won by Howlin’ Mad Flower. We had a different
winner of the
longest drive this month, the prize being won by Paul
‘PABS’ Ebsworth with a drawn three wood.
A whole plethora of scores came in after the 18 holes were completed
with the difference between highest a lowest scores of over 20
stableford points. However, in third place on count back was
‘Titch’ White with 36 points, in second place with
38
points was Howlin’ Mad Flower, but in first place with a
fantastic 40 points, ending his drought was Roger
‘Cueball’
Johns……well played Roger!!
There were also three 2’s scored on the day, one from Frenchy
on
his nearest the pin hole, and the other two 2’s came on par 4
holes which is unprecedented for the ROGS, one by Tim ‘Baa
Baa’ Porter who drove the first green and sunk the putt for
an
eagle, and the other coming from the Peter ‘The Missing
Digit’ Cheeseman who holed his 2nd shot with a three wood on
the
stroke index one hole collecting 5 stableford points, the only problem
being that he didn’t see it go in the hole due to lack of
inches!
I look forward to seeing you at the next outing at Hockley GC on the
29th April for the Members Challenge, first tee off at 1:15 just in
time for Steve the fun bus chauffeur to get to London to pick up Miss
Middleton for the Royal Wedding!!
Note to the editor, if your husband wishes to go, you might want to
make sure that the curry sauce and kebab stain had been removed from
his jacket and trousers!!

WHITBREAD PAIRS
A really pleasing turnout for the first event of the new season under my tenure as captain with over 2 dozen members braving the 27 hole Whitbread Pairs Trophy held at The Dorset Golf & Country Club. What made it even more impressive was that the members were asked to be at the clubhouse ready for the draw to be made by 7:30 at latest! I hasten to add that there were a few bloodshot eyes and mutterings under the breaths which cannot be printed for censorship reasons!!
The competition was played in a slightly different format this year, with a 9 hole pair Texas scramble (and that is not a way of serving your eggs) in the morning, followed by a further 18 holes in the afternoon with the scores for both rounds added together to find the winner.
As the members loitered eagerly and very inconspicuously around the table where the draw was taking place, there was much nervous laughter, and sighs of relief, coupled with punches to the air when the teams were drawn. Howlin’ Mad Flower denies all knowledge of running a book to see how many holes that your truly would be able to walk in a day…….I will address this matter later in my report!!
It was unprecedented for the ROGS to have so many prizes in a day, with 6 nearest the pin prizes, 2 nearest the pin in two prizes, and a longest drive prize, where I shall do my very best not to miss any of the winners out, so here goes….. On the 9 hole Texas scramble in the morning, nearest the pin on the 4th went to Martin ‘I had Rusky as a partner, but didn’t win the trophy’ Debenham, nearest the pin on the 6th was local favourite Pete ‘PI’ Foster who just about managed to see over the top of his perfectly manicured moustache to hit his tee shot to within 8 feet, and the nearest the pin on the 8th went to yours truly. Onto the 18 holes in the afternoon after being fed and watered, the nearest the pin on the 4th went to ‘Titch’ White, on the 7th it went to Jamie ‘The Hernia’ Lake, nearest the pin in 2 on the 10th went to Steve ‘The Guest’ Cox, nearest the pin on the 17th went to Chris ‘The Comb Over’ Sumner, and nearest the pin in 2 went to Matt ‘Have you seen the size of my divots’ Cooper. Needless to say that the longest drive on the 11th went to Howlin’ Mad Flower!! Congratulations to all of the winners.
On to the main competition results, in third place on a combined total of 62 points were Roger ‘The Cueball’ Johns and Tim ‘Baa Baa’ Porter, in second place with 64 points was Chris ‘The Comb Over’ Sumner and Paul ‘PABS’ Ebsworth, and the winners on a combined total of 65 points proving that the captain could indeed walk 27 holes was your truly and ‘Sir’ Charles Way.
There was also a record amount of 2’s scored on the day with 6 being recorded, one each by ‘Titch’ White, ‘The Cueball’ Johns, my VC this year Brett ‘The Ear’ Standerwick, myself, and 2 for ‘The Comb Over’!!
I look forward to seeing you at the next outing at Romsey GC on the 25th March for the GRS Trophy, first tee off at a more respectable 11:30.
